TOPA vetoed… The fight continues
Thank you again to those who have supported our campaign to pass TOPA, the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act. Unfortunately, we have disappointing news.
TOPA was specifically vetoed by the Governor at the last minute, under pressure from the landlord lobby in Massachusetts. We are working with the TOPA Coalition to revise and reintroduce TOPA it to be refiled, and we hope to get it passed in the next year.
TOPA would have allowed tenants to either buy directly, or to designate first right of purchase of their buildings to organizations like the BNCLT. This is a frustrating delay during a time when many residents who are at risk of displacement could be making use of TOPA to stay in their homes. We are committed to continue fighting for this legislation to be passed despite this setback, and we encourage everyone to stay involved in future action alerts and updates on TOPA.
